Disaster Management/Training and Mock Drill Program in Hathiwad Tal and Chaibaha
Swabhiman Samiti, in collaboration with the District Disaster Management Program Committee, Siddharthnagar, organized a Flood Disaster Management/Training and Mock Drill Program in Hathiwad Tal in July 2008. The goal of this program was to educate and train the local community to minimize loss of life and property during floods and other natural disasters.
- Hathiwad Tal – Training and Mock Drill (July 2008)
The training program focused on a variety of essential disaster management skills, including:
- Flood Risk Management: How to minimize damage and loss during floods.
- Identification of Poisonous Snake Bites: Recognizing and handling snake bites in disaster situations.
- First Aid: Providing initial medical care during emergencies.
- Search and Rescue: Techniques for conducting search and rescue operations in flood-affected areas.
The chief trainer, Mr. Sanjay Srivastava, from the District Disaster Management Program Committee, Siddharthnagar, provided valuable insights and practical training.
1.1 Mock Drill Exercise:
The training culminated in a mock drill where participants practiced search and rescue operations, first aid, and handling of emergencies in front of hundreds of local villagers. A total of 18 volunteers from Swabhiman Samiti participated in the mock drill, receiving hands-on experience in emergency response situations.
- Chaibaha – Disaster Management/Training and Mock Drill (August 2008)
Following the success of the Hathiwad Tal training, Swabhiman Samiti organized another 5-day disaster management training in Chaibaha, with support from the District Disaster Management Program Committee and the Uttar Pradesh Government. The training took place from 10th August to 14th August 2008, with a 4-day training session in Siddharthnagar followed by a 1-day mock drill at Sekhui’s Chaibaha Ghat.
2.1 Training Focus Areas:
- Floods, Earthquakes, and Fire Hazards: The training covered disaster management techniques for various emergencies.
- First Aid: Participants learned how to administer first aid in disaster situations.
- Snake Bite Recognition and Handling: Recognizing symptoms and providing initial treatment for snake bites during floods or other emergencies.
- Search and Rescue Techniques: Participants were trained in effective search and rescue strategies to assist during natural calamities.



2.2 Opening of the Program:
The program was inaugurated by Smt. Pasi Shanti Devi, the Block Panchayat President of Uska Bazar, who addressed the volunteers and participants, emphasizing the importance of community preparedness and disaster management skills.
2.3 Training Execution:
The training was conducted by Mr. Sanjay Srivastava, the chief trainer from the District Disaster Management Program Committee, Siddharthnagar, and other trainers from Basti including Mr. Rakesh Srivastava and four additional trainers. The volunteers learned the basic principles of disaster management and gained practical experience through hands-on exercises.
2.4 Mock Drill in Chaibaha:
On the final day, a mock drill was conducted in Chaibaha Ghat to simulate real-life disaster situations such as floods, earthquakes, and fire hazards. During the mock drill, participants practiced search and rescue operations, first aid, and disaster response techniques in front of hundreds of villagers.

The Disaster Management Training and Mock Drill Programs conducted in Hathiwad Tal and Chaibaha had several positive outcomes:
- Community Preparedness: The training helped local volunteers and residents better understand the key actions to take during disasters, ensuring faster and more effective responses in real emergency situations.
- Volunteer Empowerment: 18 volunteers from Swabhiman Samiti gained vital skills in first aid, search and rescue, and disaster management, which they could use to help their communities.
