Project Overview
The Know Your Body, Know Your Rights project is a collaborative initiative between Swabhiman Samiti (led by Mamta Varma, President) and The YP Foundation. This project is aimed at addressing the significant gap in Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) in rural areas, specifically in the Siddharthnagar district of Uttar Pradesh. It is designed to empower adolescents and young people by providing them with the necessary knowledge and skills about sexual and reproductive health, gender rights, sexual abuse, consent, HIV awareness, and pubertal changes.
The project focuses on creating awareness about key issues such as sexual violence, gender-based discrimination, and menstrual hygiene, while promoting a healthy understanding of bodily changes during puberty. It will engage adolescents aged 14-25 years through training, peer education, community awareness, and advocacy initiatives aimed at empowering youth to make informed decisions regarding their health, relationships, and sexuality.
By educating and raising awareness in rural communities, the project hopes to reduce stigmas surrounding sexuality and sexual health, while also creating a safe space for young people to engage in open discussions about sexual rights. In addition, the project will foster peer education and advocacy efforts for the inclusion of CSE in public health policies.
Objectives
The Know Your Body, Know Your Rights project seeks to achieve the following objectives:
- Increase Awareness on Sexuality and Rights: Educate young people, especially adolescents, about the importance of sexuality education and gender rights to foster a more informed and empowered generation.
- Empower Adolescents to Understand Their Bodies and Rights: Provide knowledge on sexual health, puberty, consent, and reproductive rights, allowing youth to make informed decisions about their bodies and their lives.
- Create Peer Educators: Identify and train 30 Peer Educators (PEs) who will disseminate the knowledge gained from the project to their peers and communities, ensuring the sustainability and broad outreach of the project.
- Raise Awareness on Preventing Sexual Abuse and Violence: Empower adolescents to recognize and report instances of sexual abuse and violence and foster a culture of consent.
- Advocate for Comprehensive Sexuality Education in Government Programs: Engage with government officials to integrate CSE into public health programs and policy frameworks, ensuring its inclusion in RKSK (Rashtriya Kishor Swasthya Karyakram).
- Promote Healthy Practices: Increase understanding about menstrual hygiene, pubertal changes, and safe sex practices, reducing stigmas surrounding these topics.
Background and Rationale
In rural India, the lack of Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) in both school curriculums and family discussions has left many young people ill-informed about critical issues related to sexual health, gender identity, and reproductive rights. This absence leads to confusion, fear, and the perpetuation of harmful myths, particularly among adolescents. In addition, the stigma associated with discussing sexuality, HIV, and gender-based violence often prevents young people from seeking the support and information they need.
Young people, especially girls, in rural areas often face early marriages, child sexual abuse, gender-based violence, and poor sexual health outcomes due to this lack of information. Moreover, many parents and teachers are either unaware or uncomfortable addressing these topics. This results in a lack of safe spaces for youth to discuss their bodies, sexuality, and rights.
The Know Your Body, Know Your Rights project was developed to address this gap in Siddharthnagar district, Uttar Pradesh, where such challenges are particularly prevalent. The project aims to provide a comprehensive solution by offering age-appropriate sexuality education to adolescents, equipping them with knowledge, awareness, and tools to protect their health and rights.
Planned Outreach
The outreach for this project will focus on youth aged 14-25 years across Siddharthnagar district, Uttar Pradesh. This will include 300 adolescents, particularly focusing on underserved communities, rural youth, and those who lack access to educational resources about sexual health and rights.
- District: Siddharthnagar, Uttar Pradesh
- Target Block: Uska Bazar
- Target Panchayat: 10 villages
- Total Beneficiaries: 300 youth (age 14-25 years)
- Program Duration: 1 year
- Target Audience: Adolescents and young people in rural communities, especially girls.

Key Strategies
- Peer Education: Train 30 Peer Educators (PEs) who will serve as leaders within their communities. These peer leaders will be responsible for spreading knowledge and ensuring the sustainability of the project.
- Community Engagement: Organize meetings and workshops within the community to engage with parents, local leaders, and youth to discuss the importance of Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) and its role in the well-being of adolescents.
- Advocacy for Policy Change: Advocate for the inclusion of CSE in local health policies and programs such as RKSK and JSY by engaging with government officials and policy-makers.
- Interactive Workshops: Conduct educational workshops with adolescents, covering topics like sexuality, gender equality, sexual abuse prevention, and reproductive rights.
- Awareness Campaigns: Use a variety of channels (community events, social media, posters, and pamphlets) to raise awareness about the importance of CSE, menstrual hygiene, gender rights, and sexual abuse prevention.
- Support Systems for Reporting Abuse: Establish confidential mechanisms to help young people report incidents of sexual abuse or violence and access the necessary support services.
Core Activities
- Creation and Training of Peer Educators (PEs): Train 30 adolescents to become Peer Educators on topics such as sexual rights, gender equality, HIV, menstrual health, and pubertal changes. PEs will engage in one-on-one sessions, group workshops, and community outreach to ensure widespread education.
- Monthly Workshops and Sessions: Regular monthly workshops and sessions for adolescents to increase their knowledge about sexual and reproductive health, gender equality, sexual abuse prevention, and reproductive rights.
- Community Engagement: Conduct meetings with community leaders, local authorities, and parents to discuss the importance of CSE and encourage community support.
- Policy Advocacy and Engagement with Government Officials: Organize monthly meetings with local block and district-level government officials to discuss the importance of CSE and advocate for its inclusion in official programs such as RKSK.
- Post-Event Evaluation: Conduct pre- and post-event surveys and evaluations to measure the effectiveness of the workshops and the knowledge gained by participants. Use surveys to identify gaps and improve the delivery of CSE content.
Achievements and Outcomes
- Increased Awareness of Sexuality and Rights: By the end of the program, 300 adolescents will be educated about sexual health, gender equality, sexual abuse prevention, and reproductive rights.
- Development of Peer Educators: 30 Peer Educators will be capable of spreading awareness within their communities, ensuring the program's sustainability.
- Improved Reporting of Abuse: Adolescents will feel empowered to recognize and report abuse, and community-level awareness will increase.
- Advocacy Success: Influence on local policies and programs to include CSE, ensuring that future generations have access to better education on sexuality and health.
